Bamboo Fargesia Augustissima is a species of bamboo native to central China, more precisely to the province of Sichuan, where it grows in low mountainous areas. It is a non-spreading bamboo, meaning it does not produce invasive rhizomes and does not require an anti-rhizome barrier to contain it. It forms tight clumps of purplish-green culms, which can reach 4 to 5 meters in height and 2 cm in diameter. Its culms are very pruinose, in other words they are covered with a thin layer of wax which gives them a powdery appearance.

What makes the Bamboo Fargesia Augustissima attractive is its abundant, fine and elegant foliage, which gives it a drooping and graceful appearance. Its leaves are long, narrow and bright green, and they persist all year round. They are arranged in dense clumps along the culms, which creates a plant fountain effect. This bamboo is ideal for creating an ornamental clump or a privacy hedge in the garden, because it offers a beautiful presence and movement in the wind.

Bamboo Fargesia Augustissima is a fairly easy bamboo to grow, but it has some requirements to meet in order to grow in good conditions. It prefers an exposure to partial shade or shade, because it does not like the scorching sun or cold, drying winds. It appreciates fresh, moist, light and well-drained soil, preferably acidic or neutral. It tolerates temperatures down to -15°C, but its foliage can suffer if the mercury drops lower. It is therefore necessary to protect it from frost in winter, in particular by mulching its base and shaking off its stubble in the event of snow.

Planting Bamboo Fargesia Augustissima is preferably done in spring or autumn, avoiding periods of frost or drought. You must dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and install it at the same depth as in its original pot. You must then fill the hole with potting soil mixed with garden soil and pack lightly. Water thoroughly after planting and keep the soil slightly moist for the first year. You must also add a special bamboo fertilizer in spring and fall to encourage its growth.

The Bamboo Fargesia Augustissima does not require much maintenance, but it can be pruned to limit its height or spreading. Pruning is done by cutting the culms at the base or at the desired height, avoiding injuring the lateral buds. Pruning should preferably be done in spring or autumn, removing dead or damaged stubble. The Bamboo Fargesia Augustissima can also be grown in a pot on a terrace or balcony, provided you choose a container that is wide and deep enough, and provide it with a good dose of water and fertilizer regularly.

Bamboo Fargesia Augustissima is a bamboo that offers multiple possibilities for use in the garden. It can be used as an isolated plant, as a windbreak or privacy screen, as an ornamental bed or as a background to highlight other plants. It can also be associated with other species of bamboo or with perennial or shrubby plants which appreciate the same growing conditions. It brings a touch of exoticism and greenery to the garden all year round.
