Origin South Africa

The Amaryllis belladonna or Belladonna Lily is a bulbous plant native to South Africa. Its multiple flowering, of about ten large flowers at the top of each stem, offers a magnificent show that is as visual as it is fragrant! Its large fleshy bulb is topped by rigid, bare stems 60 cm high: these hold its many light pink flowers, 10 cm in diameter, which give off a sweet vanilla scent. Its deciduous foliage precedes the flowering by a long way, in early autumn, with ribboned leaves measuring 40 cm in length, which persist until spring, when they disappear to make way for the flowering in summer.

The Belladonna lily is a true outdoor species, although it is somewhat chilly: it can withstand the cold (-12°C to -15°C) with proper winter protection. It can be grown outdoors in mild climates, in neutral, rich and draining soil. With a height of 75 cm and a spread of 20 to 60 cm, it can be used to decorate a garden or a bed, or to form an attractive border.

PLANTING:

It is advisable to plant the Amaryllis belladonna in a sunny spot away from strong, cold winds. In another configuration, the Belladonna lily prefers to be grown in a pot, in a mixture of potting soil and gravel.

Planting should be done in late summer, around the beginning of September, placed just below the surface of the soil in well-drained soil and with a spacing of 40 cm between each bulb. Watering should be moderate throughout the year, keeping the bulb dry during the winter by protecting it with mulch or by overwintering it above ground in a dry, cool place away from frost.
