Dracunculus vulgaris or Dragon arum is a rare plant in the garden. Appreciated for its rapid growth, this perennial tuberous plant offers spectacular flowering in spring. Particularly easy to live with, it is not afraid of arid soils, nor of diseases and pests.

Native to Albania, Crete and Turkey, Dracunculus vulgaris has very decorative green and white spotted foliage on a thick purple spotted stem. At maturity, the plant reaches a height of 0.60 to 1.20 metres, depending on the size of the tuber.

From May to June, it enchants the garden with its beautiful purple flowers. Measuring 30 to 60 cm, its highly original inflorescence is followed by beautiful orange-red berries. It is quite hardy and can withstand minimum temperatures of between -7 and -12°C. With a good mulch, it can therefore be planted even in the colder northern regions.

Lovely in flowerbeds and borders, Dragon arum thrives in all soils, provided they are well drained. It is planted in September, on a bed of gravel or coarse sand.
