A cross between Viburnum carlesii and Viburnum utile, Viburnum burkwoodii or Burkwood viburnum is a bushy, rounded shrub, decorative with its generous spring flowering and orange blossom scent, and its magnificent coppery red foliage in autumn. Reaching heights of 2 to 2.5 m in a single spread, it is ideal for small gardens.

Viburnum burkwoodii flowers in April-May. It is covered with pink buds that open one after the other onto pink and then white flowers arranged in a 5 to 10 cm ball. These are very fragrant. Melliferous and nectariferous, they are visited by foraging insects. In autumn, they give way to small red fruits that turn black and are very decorative and appreciated by birds. Its semi-evergreen foliage in temperate regions is bronze in colour at budburst and then shiny green. It takes on warm orange to red hues in autumn.

The Burkwood viburnum is hardy, withstanding temperatures of -20 to -25°C. It can be grown in acidic to neutral, cool, well-drained soil in sun to part shade. It can withstand high temperatures, calcareous or compact soils and even pollution. It is a low-maintenance shrub, simply removing the dead wood.

Viburnum burkwoodii works wonderfully in a bed, in a hedge or isolated, offering both its splendid colours and its powerful perfume.
