The Rhamnus frangula Asplenifolia is also known as Feathery glossy buckthorn because of its distinctive, narrow and delicate foliage. The leaves of the Feathery glossy buckthorn are 10 centimetres long and have a wavy edge. The narrow, dark green leaves turn yellow or orange in autumn. In winter, the black berries are very popular with birds, making for an enchanting sight in your garden.

Rhamnus frangula Asplenifolia is known for its resistance to disease and pests. It is a shrub that does not weaken in the face of strong differences in temperature, especially in the face of drought once its roots are well established. It can reach a height of 3 m and spread over 2 m on average. Its insignificant greenish bell-shaped flowers appear in May-June, and subsequently bear numerous fruits that are inedible but very popular with birds.

The Feathery glossy buckthorn is a shrub that adapts to all soils provided that the soil is not too calcareous, so an acid to neutral soil is ideal. The best exposure for this shrub is in mid-shade to veiled sun. In winter, its hardiness will allow it to withstand temperatures as low as -35°C. In summer, heat waves are not a problem as long as the soil is kept cool by mulching. Moderate watering is therefore highly recommended. It is very resistant to pruning, which it will undergo without fail in order to develop better afterwards, and which should be carried out towards the end of the winter.

The Feathery glossy buckthorn is very decorative with its very cut foliage, it gives a Japanese look to your garden and will be perfect in a mixture with other shrubs of this type, for example the Purple Japanese maple or Katsura or the Japanese aralia Spider's web and many other heathland shrubs. Planted alone, in a bed or even in a pot, it will not go unnoticed in the garden or on the terrace.
