A Self-fertile variety, the Decaisnea Fargesii, also known as the Blue bean shrub, is distinguished by its astonishing bluish fruits with their characteristic shape, which are perfectly edible. Too rare in our gardens, this beautiful shrub will delight lovers of original plants.

Native to China, and more precisely to the Himalayas, Decaisnea Fargesii is hardy to -23°C and reaches 3 to 4 metres in height and 2 to 3 metres in width at maturity. Its early bluish-green foliage is sensitive to frosts but recovers without difficulty. In autumn, it turns butter yellow to the delight of the eye. The Blue bean shrub flowers from May to June. Its greenish, bell-shaped flowers with very long sepals form clusters of 30 to 40 cm with about 30 units. In August, they give rise to very decorative blue fruits 10 cm long and 3 cm wide, with translucent flesh that tastes like watermelon and smells like banana, and contains black seeds. They can be eaten fresh or in salads that will surprise your guests. They are harvested in October.

Decaisnea Fargesii likes rich, neutral soil that is normally moist, even a little cool. To avoid drying out, mulching is necessary after planting. Pruning allows the tree to be sculpted according to your wishes. It is sufficient to limit pruning to the lower branches, to ensure fruiting on the upper branches.
