Gymnocladus Dioicus, a beautiful exotic appearance.
Native to North America and Canada, the Gymnocladus Dioicus, also known as the Kentucky Coffee Tree, is a very beautiful tree with a rounded, rather spreading, slow-growing habit, grown in large areas. At maturity, it reaches 18 to 20 m in height and 15 m in spread. Ornamental thanks to its gigantic leaves, which can reach 1 m in length and give it an exotic appearance, it is also interesting for its hardwood, which is used in cabinet making.
The leaves of Gymnocladus Dioicus appear late (May-June). They are slightly pink in colour, turning green in summer and yellow in autumn. They are alternate and bipinnate. In June, the white flowering takes place, discreet but very mellifluous and perfumed. The flowers give way to pods containing seeds. These can be roasted like coffee beans, but if eaten raw they are poisonous.
The Kentucky Coffee Tree is completely hardy (down to -25° to -29°). It adapts to all types of rich, deep soil. It appreciates the sun and is resistant to urban pollution. Maintenance pruning is necessary, simply remove the dead wood and aerate the inside of the branch.
