Fagus sylvatica ‘Atropunicea’ has beautiful chocolate purple foliage and a nice gray, smooth bark. In the fall, its toothed leaves, measuring 4 to 9 cm, turn a coppery red, these once dead remain in place until new growth in spring. The Purple Beech does wonders in isolation with its majestic spreading habit, but also adapts very well to pruning for hedge training. In addition to these aesthetic attractions, it produces edible fruits, beechnuts, which can be enjoyed in various ways.

Native to Europe, Fagus sylvatica ‘Atropunicea’ is very resistant to cold: it can withstand negative temperatures down to -30 ° C. When adults, they can reach 25 meters in height for 15 meters in wingspan. In May, small rather discreet catkins appear, then give way to beechnuts which generally appear in pairs in spiky cups.

Purple Beech adapts to all soils but not too wet. It likes sun or partial shade. This very decorative tree will give you complete satisfaction if it is planted isolated, it will attract attention with its warm and deep colors. If you don't want such an imposing subject, you can choose to plant it as a hedge where it will also adapt very well.
