Description
Particularly decorative with its two-tone foliage, the Variegated purple-flowered cotoneaster, or Cotoneaster atropurpureus variegatus, has an attractive creeping habit, perfect as a ground cover, at the edge of beds or on embankments. Drought resistant, it beautifies the garden while requiring minimal maintenance.
Cotoneaster atropurpureus variegatus is very hardy and can withstand cold temperatures as low as -29°C. When fully grown, this very low and compact shrub reaches only 0.35 to 0.50 metres in height and spreads out to 0.70 to 1 metre. Its attractive, cream-coloured, semi-evergreen foliage is adorned with small pink and red spots in autumn. The flowering season for the Variegated purple-flowered cotoneaster takes place in May and June. The pinkish-white flowers attract bees every year. They are followed by red berries that are both attractive and popular with birds.
Easy to live with, Cotoneaster atropurpureus variegatus thrives in all soils, whether in sun, semi-shade or shade. To maintain its vigour and beauty throughout the seasons, simply cut back any damaged or misaligned branches. Pruning can be done either in early spring or after flowering.
