Cabbage tree or Dracaena australis: the tropics in your garden.

Dracaena australis is an attractive evergreen shrub native to New Zealand and Australia. Its upright habit and leathery foliage, reminiscent of a yucca, make it a very exotic decorative asset for the garden. It prefers the mild climates of the Mediterranean, or the veranda, terraces and balconies of northern regions where it will thrive in a large pot (in this case not exceeding 2 m in height).

The Cabbage tree, also known by its Latin name Dracaena australis, has dense, glaucous green foliage. The flowers, grouped in large upright panicles of 1 m, are creamy white, very fragrant and melliferous. It blooms from May to July. Its trunk has a cracked bark. In the open ground in temperate regions, the Cabbage tree can reach a height of 2 to 6 metres with a spread of 2 metres.

Dracaena australis is a rather slow growing plant. It is very long-lived and relatively hardy, withstanding temperatures as low as -6°C. It thrives in sun to part shade, in rich, sandy, cool, well-drained soil. For pot cultivation, it is recommended to add 50% citrus potting soil. The Cabbage tree is resistant to wind (even violent) and sea spray, which makes it an ideal plant for the seaside. Dracaena australis can be planted in beds, alone, or as a windbreak hedge. Once installed, the Cabbage tree requires little maintenance: it is undemanding and not prone to disease.

When growing in a pot, bring the Cordyline into a room between 5 and 7°C in winter and water once a month.
