Origin South America

Jacaranda mimosifolia, or Blue Jacaranda, is a beautiful and popular exotic tree, native to South America. It has an impressive and very abundant flowering composed of very fragrant lavender-blue inflorescences, and is also cultivated for its precious wood. It grows rapidly and reaches a height of 8 to 15 metres, spreading out to 6 to 10 metres at maturity (2 m in pots). Its trunk is covered with a fine grey-brown bark, which is smooth at first and then scaly over the years, and its feathery deciduous leaves, 25 to 50 cm long, are foliated and hairy.

The Blue Jacaranda is not very hardy, it can withstand low temperatures of -5 °C to -7 °C, and down to -12 °C for very short periods. It can be grown in the open ground in regions with mild winters, in our regions it is advisable to grow it in a large pot, overwintering indoors from December to April. In the latter case, the tree will grow to a maximum height of 1.5 to 2 metres. Its long and dense melliferous flowering period starts in May and ends in July: it offers a splendid show of very graceful 30 cm long clusters of 5 cm long bell-shaped flowers.

To plant Jacaranda mimosifolia, it is advisable to choose a location with rich, well-draining, cool soil, with a sunny or semi-shady exposure and protected from strong winds. It requires abundant watering, especially in dry periods, and regular pruning to give it the desired shape and remove dead wood.
