Passiflora exoniensis, beautiful exotic flowers

A hybrid of horticultural origin, Passiflora exoniensis is a very vigorous, self-fertilising climber that can reach heights of 4 to 6 m and widths of 0.50 to 1 m. A true queen of summer, it brightens up gardens with large, exotic flowers (up to 12 cm) that are very curious in their shape. Its evergreen foliage is equipped with tendrils that allow it to cling to its support alone.

In July-August, numerous dark pink, pendulous tube-shaped flowers open in bud. The spreading petals become lighter pink with long stamens. They are followed by elongated yellow edible fruits. The downy, soft green leaves are three-lobed.

Rustic down to -5°C, Exeter passion flower needs to be protected in case of very cold weather, you should make sure to mulch the plant, plant it in the ground in temperate regions but keep it in a pot in northern regions. It can be planted in any type of rich, moist, well-drained soil, exposed to the sun and protected from cold, drying winds. But you can also plant it under cover in a veranda. Do not hesitate to prune it after flowering to limit its growth.

Passiflora exoniensis is perfect to decorate a wall or a pergola or simply in a large pot on the terrace or balcony. The originality of its flowers will give you an amazing show during the two summer months.
