Vaccinium corymbosum Elliott, or Blueberry Elliott, is a variety of fruit-bearing shrub native to North America. This species with late fruiting, in August-September, and offers an abundant harvest of large blue fruits, fragrant and sweet, with firm flesh. It blooms in April-May, with pretty little white flowers that are a delight for foraging insects.
The Blueberry Elliott is very hardy, from -25°C to -30°C: it appreciates a sunny location with acidic soil enriched with heather eart, moist and well drained. Nicknamed the "Giant American Blueberry", it is a large tree that can reach a height of 2 metres and a spread of 1.50 metres. The Vaccinium corymbosum Elliott is an elegant addition to the garden, either in a bed or as a fruit hedge, with its magnificent, very dense, glossy deciduous foliage, which turns a blazing red to purple in autumn.
Cultivation and maintenance of the Blueberry Elliott is easy: generous watering at planting, then moderate, and annual pruning in February or early March. Self-fertile, Vaccinium corymbosum Elliott yield is much better when cross-pollinated: it is advisable to place at least one or two of its other blueberry bushes nearby.
