Ribes rubrum Werdavia or White currant Werdavia is a fruit-bearing shrub native to the Northern Hemisphere. This self-fertile variety produces bunches of large, bright white fruit in July and August, with a sweet, tangy and fragrant taste. This vigorous and productive shrub has a bushy habit with deciduous foliage consisting of medium green palmate leaves on thornless branches. It blooms in May-June with small greenish-white inflorescences, which are very melliferous.

White currant Werdavia is hardy (-20°C) and has few soil requirements. It likes to be planted between October and November, in fairly moist, light soil, with a sunny or semi-shady exposure. When mature, it can reach up to 1.50 metres in height with a circumference of 1.20 metres: it is an ideal subject to form a fruit hedge, to decorate a bed or an orchard.

Easy to grow and maintain, Ribes rubrum Werdavia is also very resistant to disease. It only requires annual pruning, between February and July, keeping one third of its height. As it is fairly sensitive to heat and drought, it is advisable to mulch the base and ensure sufficient watering in summer and in dry weather. To promote its growth and fruiting, it appreciates a contribution of organic fertiliser in the first years.
