Salix integra Hakuro-nishiki or Shrimp Willow is a horticultural plant native to Japan. This dwarf willow has a rounded, bushy habit with small salmon-pink deciduous leaves at bud break, which turn green with cream spots in summer. This shrub is graceful, compact and very decorative, with colourful spring foliage on a dark red bark stem and pink catkins appearing in May.
The Shrimp Willow prefers acid to neutral, deep, rich, moist soil and a shady position, and will tolerate temperatures as low as -34°C without problems. An unpruned tree can reach 2 to 3 metres in height with a circumference of 1.5 metres. For cultivation in the open ground, it is advisable to plant it in the autumn: it will flourish perfectly in a bed, in isolated on a lawn or will form magnificent coloured hedges. It can also be grown in a pot to create a beautiful effect on a terrace or balcony.
To develop the full potential of Salix integra Hakuro-nishiki, the soil must be kept moist at all times: it cannot tolerate dryness. A major pruning must be carried out from February to March to preserve its beautiful colours: dead wood must be removed and a spherical formation pruned to obtain a subject worthy of topiary art!
The proposed plants are not grafted on to the stem and grow into a nice bushy bush.
