Description
Ebbinge's silverberry, or Elaeagnus ebbingei, is an evergreen shrub which is distinguished by its thick and shiny foliage, dark green tending to blue dotted with small lighter dots, with a silvery underside. This shrub is very adaptable and resistant: it grows in all types of soil, even poor and dry, and withstands temperatures ranging from -20 to -25°C. It can reach 2 to 3 meters high and 2 to 2.50 meters wide, forming a dense and bushy habit.
The interest of Ebbinge's silverberry also lies in its autumn flowering, which occurs from September to November. It then produces small, bell-shaped flowers, creamy white, which give off a sweet and pleasant scent of jasmine. These flowers are followed by round, fleshy fruits, very decorative, orange-red in colour, they are edible and appreciated by birds.
Ebbinge's silverberry is an ideal shrub for creating a hedge, because it offers good shade all year round, while being easy to maintain. It is planted in sun or partial shade, in autumn or spring, leaving approximately 70 centimeters between each foot. Elaeagnus ebbingei is pruned in spring to give it the desired shape. It can also be grown alone or in clumps, to benefit from its decorative foliage and fragrant flowering.
