Description
Glycyrrhiza uralensis is an ancient herbaceous perennial plant, valued for its aromatic, sweet, and medicinal roots.
Glycyrrhiza uralensis belongs to the Fabaceae family (like peas or clover) and is native to northern and eastern Asia, mainly China, Mongolia, and Siberia. It is traditionally used in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine, particularly for its soothing, anti-inflammatory, and expectorant properties.
It grows in broad clumps thanks to its creeping rhizomes, and develops roots rich in glycyrrhizin, with the characteristic licorice flavour.
Ural licorice is a bushy perennial with deciduous foliage. Its compound leaves resemble those of black locust or alfalfa. In summer, it produces mauve to violet flowers in upright clusters, followed by pods containing seeds.
Mature height: 80 cm to 1 m
Flowering: June to August
Flower colour: Pale violet to mauve
Fragrance: Sweet-tasting root with a very distinct flavour
Lifespan: Long-lived perennial, can live over 10 years if well established
Type: Rhizomatous herbaceous perennial
Foliage: Deciduous, light green, compound
Hardiness: Very good (down to -20 °C)
Habit: Bushy, spreading via rhizomes
Flowering occurs in summer, generally from June to August, depending on climate. The discreet but elegant flowers form in small upright clusters, and are attractive to bees.
Exposure: Full sun or very light partial shade
Soil: Light, deep, loose, and well-drained. Prefers sandy or light clay soil without standing water.
Avoid compacted soils, which hinder root development.
Plant young plants in spring, after the last frosts, in well-prepared soil. Allow space around each plant (at least 50 cm) to enable root spread.
Regular watering the first year to promote rooting
Then, the plant tolerates dry periods well
Mulch is recommended in summer to keep the soil cool
No specific pruning needed
Cut back dry stems in late winter to encourage regrowth in spring
By dividing rhizomes in spring or autumn
By sowing in spring after soaking the seeds
Slow growth during the first two years
Glycyrrhiza uralensis is well suited for:
Medicinal plant gardens
Permaculture gardens
Beds of useful or ethnobotanical perennials
Sunny spots with light soil
A robust plant, rarely affected by disease.
As long as it is well ventilated and planted in drained soil, it causes no particular issues.
Avoid excess moisture, which can cause root rot.
Root harvest: From the 3rd or 4th year, in autumn
Uses: Herbal teas, decoctions, extracts, natural flavouring
Prolonged consumption is not recommended in cases of hypertension or kidney failure (seek medical advice)
Ensure deep soil to promote root growth
Do not move once well established
Combine with other medicinal plants like chamomile, lemon balm, or mallow
Ural licorice is a discreet yet precious perennial, worthy of any garden devoted to natural health, self-sufficiency, or herbal well-being. Though its growth is slow, it rewards patient gardeners with a beautiful, useful, and resilient plant.
