Solanum muricatum or Pépino: a fruit tree to discover.
The Solanum muricatum also called Pepino or Melon Pear is a shrub plant which comes to us from South America, this one is perennial if it came back to winter inside, but it is most often cultivated in annual.
Little known and still rare in our vegetable gardens, Pepino gives, from September to November, tasty and very juicy fruits, rich in vitamin C, with a light pear taste but especially of melon, which will delight the taste buds of gardeners looking for originality and new flavours.
Its purple and white flowers similar to those of potatoes, which appear from June to September, also make it a very decorative shrub. Solanum muricatum will offer you many yellow fruits streaked with purple stripes that you can eat raw or in juice. You can also use them to make jams, compotes and pies.
A very vigorous and disease-resistant fruit tree, the Pépino can reach 1.20 m in height and spread out from 0.5 m to 1 m. It is grown like tomatoes, in the garden or undercover. Not resistant to cold, Solanum muricatum needs heat, it does not tolerate negative temperatures. The Melon Pear settles in rich, fresh and well-drained soil, it must be exposed to the sun and sheltered from the wind.
