Native to southwestern Europe and Morocco, Stipa gigantea also called Giant feather grass is a perennial grass forming a spectacular tuft, dense and compact, with long upright stems. It is an ornamental plant, ideal for dry gardens, with multiple advantages, easy to grow and requiring little maintenance.
The Stipa gigantea, has a rapid growth and develops long thin and shiny leaves, of a beautiful bluish green from which spring, from May to August, very large flower stalks bearing inflorescences grouped in panicles of 20 cm long similar to those of oats. These can reach a height of 1.80 m to 2 m, hence the name Giant feather grass. Creamy yellow in color in late spring, they turn golden in winter and persist until December.
Stipa gigantea offers good resistance to cold down to -20 ° C. It is a plant adapted to dry soils, even stony or sandy, neutral to limestone, light and well drained. To thrive fully, she needs a location in full sun. You will cut the dry flower stalks in the spring before the vegetation starts. Do not prune the foliage.
