The Large-leaf lime or Tilia platyphyllos is a tree species of Asian and European origin, mainly used to line roads and streets. Its great hardiness (up to -20°C) and longevity (up to 1000 years) are the advantages of the large-leaf lime tree: a perennial line tree with a very elegant silhouette! Another special feature of the Large-leaf lime is its very fragrant, nectar-rich flowers: bees and tea drinkers love them! The flowers, leaves and sapwood are used in herbal medicine.

Tilia platyphyllos can be used to decorate a lawn, a garden or to line a driveway, with its height reaching 25 metres when fully grown and a circumference of up to 12 metres. It has a smooth-looking grey trunk that cracks as it ages, and deciduous foliage of intense green with a light green underside. Its dense, broad, heart-shaped leaves measure up to 15 cm in length: it is an excellent ally for effective outdoor shading! In June-July, the flowering appears: a magnificent show of a multitude of bouquets of 2 to 4 small white or pale yellow flowers forming a pedunculated cyme.

The Large-leafed Lime is not very demanding in terms of soil quality, but can easily be placed in any environment: it appreciates a sunny or semi-shady exposure and rich, fresh soil. It is best planted in autumn or spring, with plenty of watering. Tilia platyphyllos requires little maintenance, prune annually if necessary.
