Description
Pink-flowered locust tree – Robinia ‘Margaretta Georgia da Torino®’
The Robinia Margaretta Georgina Da Torino®, commonly known as the pink-flowered locust tree, is a recent ornamental variety originating from Italy. Selected for its remarkable flowering, it belongs to the Fabaceae family. This tree is appreciated for its excellent hardiness (down to –29 °C), heat tolerance, and resistance to harmful insects, making it well suited to a wide range of climates.
Description and characteristics
This robinia develops deciduous, pinnate foliage in a bright light green shade, turning golden yellow in autumn. It can reach 8 to 10 metres in height with a similar spread. Its flexible branches bend in the wind without breaking, and its airy silhouette fits harmoniously into gardens. With few thorns and good tolerance to difficult conditions, it offers strong ornamental value.
Fruiting
After the spring flowering, the robinia produces hanging pods typical of the Fabaceae family, adding visual interest later in the season. Although not edible, they bring texture to the foliage and draw attention in autumn.
Pollination and flowering
The Robinia Margaretta Georgina Da Torino® produces a spectacular bloom in May–June, with long clusters of purplish-pink flowers (at least 15 cm), lightly scented. Highly melliferous, they attract bees, butterflies and other pollinators, enhancing garden biodiversity.
Cultivation and care
Easy to grow, the pink-flowered locust tree requires little maintenance once established. It tolerates a wide range of soils, withstands drought well, and needs no particular care. It also fixes nitrogen in the soil, naturally enriching it and supporting neighbouring plants. No specific treatments are required thanks to its natural resistance.
Planting
Plant ideally in autumn or spring, in well-drained soil. It prefers fertile, slightly acidic to neutral soils, and a sunny to partially shaded position for optimal flowering. Regular watering during the first years encourages deep rooting. Once established, it becomes autonomous and resistant to extreme weather.
Pruning
Pruning is optional and aims only to balance the shape or remove dead wood. It can be carried out in late winter or early spring. The robinia tolerates light pruning well, but minimal intervention is enough to preserve its natural habit and flowering.
The Robinia Margaretta Georgina Da Torino® is an excellent choice for any gardener wishing to add colour and life to their green space. With its pink flowers that attract pollinators, its changing foliage and easy cultivation, it brings elegance and charm to any garden.
