Description
Schinus Molle is also known as Peruvian pepper or American pepper. It has its origins in South America.
Historically its resin was used for the embalming of the Incas. Its berries, pink pepper, appear in late summer and are edible. Bark and resin of Peruvian pepper are known for their medicinal properties and their leaves, once crumpled, release a pleasantly peppery scent allowing it to be a natural repellent against most diseases and insects.
When blooming in spring, the cluster-shaped flowers are a pretty creamy white.
The Schinus Molle can reach a height of 10 to 15 m. It grows fast, its leaves are evergreen. The hardiness of the Peruvian pepper is weak, beyond -5 ° C it loses its leaves. It can still withstand some frosts. A pot culture will therefore be preferred in the colder regions. Its pretty bunches of pink grains, as well as its falling port, make it a beautiful ornamental tree.
The Schinus Molle enjoys the sun and is not greedy in water, it can withstand high temperatures thanks to its roots sinking very deep into the ground and adapts to most soils.
