Emmenopterys Henryi, an enigmatic tree.

Originally from southern China, Emmenopterys Henryi or Chinese Emmenopterys is a tree of the family Rubiaceae, very rare and much sought after. Threatened with extinction in its natural environment, it is a protected species today.

The Emmenopterys Henryi can reach ten meters high in our latitudes but up to 45 meters in the Chinese forests. It is a spreading, dark green deciduous tree with red petioles. Its straight trunk is covered with a cracked greyish brown bark.

What makes the undeniable beauty of Chinese Emmenopterys is its remarkable flowering, a challenge for collectors because it is very random. From June to September, when all the conditions are met, clusters of Jasmine-shaped, funnel-shaped flowers open up, some of which develop a large white bract. Their color varies from white to creamy white, they are veined greenish yellow, their throat is yellow green and their green calyx edged with red. The stems and peduncles are nicely pinkish.

Emmenopterys Henryi enjoys fertile soil, rich in humus, fresh but well drained and requires exposure to the sun or partial shade, sheltered from cold winds. Rather hardy, it supports temperatures of the order of -20 ° C. It is a tree resistant to insects and diseases.

Planted in isolation or in the middle of a bed of perennials, the Emmenopterys Henryi will not fail to delight you with its superb summer bloom and its powerful perfume, it will be the pride of the collectors.
