Hedera helix Sagittifolia or Ivy Sagittifolia is an ornamental ivy native to Europe and Russia. It has very distinctive, finely cut leaves with elongated lobes, resembling a crow's foot or an arrowhead. A climbing plant par excellence, it clings very easily to any type of support thanks to its spiky stems. It creates a magnificent plant wall or an elegant ground cover, with its dense, evergreen soft green foliage with lighter veins.
Very vigorous and hardy, the Ivy Sagittifolia is cold resistant to -22°C and grows rapidly to a height of 4 metres and a spread of 3 metres. From September to October, the ivy is covered with melliferous and nectariferous inflorescences in the form of yellow to greenish umbels. The flowers give way to small black berries, which are very popular with birds. Hedera helix Sagittifolia should be planted in fertile, cool, well-drained soil, ideally in shade or part-shade. It is fast growing and will quickly cover an embankment or an old wall, but can also easily climb up a support such as a tree or a trellis. It can also be grown in a pot or window box.
The Ivy Sagittifolia appreciates layering, which allows it to take root by pressing its stems against the ground. To encourage its growth, water regularly during the growing season and remove old branches to rejuvenate it.
