Description
With the help of a male plant, the Hergo sea buckthorn female or Hippophae rhamnoides Hergo provides an abundance of fruit from October onwards. Disease resistant, this generous variety is a delight for both gardeners and gourmets!
Native to Europe and Asia, Hippophae rhamnoides Hergo can withstand temperatures as low as -21°C. Measuring 3 metres in height at maturity, it also has a spread of 3 metres. Its thorny wood is combined with long, narrow, bluish-green leaves that disappear in autumn. Its yellow flowers bloom in April and May. The fruits, of a beautiful dark orange colour, develop on the 2 year old branches. They measure 5 to 6 mm in diameter and can be harvested from the end of October to December. They are full of vitamins and antioxidants and have a pleasant acidic flavour, which is much appreciated in fruit juices, jams and jellies.
The Hergo sea buckthorn female likes sunny locations and thrives in all soils, even poor, stony ones. It is best planted in spring, either singly or in a hedge. And to enjoy new fruit every year, it should not be pruned.
