Description
The Chinese date ‘Abundance’ is an exceptional fruit tree selected for its very high productivity, its extremely fast fruiting, and its larger fruits, which are noticeably bigger than those of the standard species. This cultivar is also less thorny, making maintenance and harvesting much easier and safer. The fruits, which turn from green to reddish‑brown, have a crisp, sweet flavour when fresh and become soft and intensely sweet when dried. ‘Abundance’ is also known for its remarkable drought resistance, its excellent hardiness, and its ability to thrive in poor, stony or calcareous soils. Its elegant, slightly spreading habit and glossy foliage give it a subtle exotic touch while remaining easy to integrate into European gardens. Thanks to its robustness, exceptional yield and ease of cultivation, ‘Abundance’ is one of the best choices for gardeners seeking a reliable, original and highly productive fruit tree.
Native to China, where the jujube tree has been cultivated for more than 4000 years. The cultivar ‘Abundance’ is a modern selection developed to improve productivity and fruit quality. It is now widely grown in temperate and Mediterranean regions.
Botanical family : Rhamnaceae.
The jujube tree has long been used in traditional Asian medicine for its nutritious and energising fruits. ‘Abundance’ stands out for its very abundant fruiting, very fast fruit production, and larger fruits. It is also less thorny, making it more pleasant to grow than the standard species.
‘Abundance’ forms an elegant small tree with a slightly spreading crown and far fewer thorns than the typical jujube. Its deciduous, glossy green foliage gives it a light and decorative appearance. The small, discreet flowers are highly nectar‑rich and ensure excellent pollination.
Mature height : 3 to 5 m
Mature spread : 2.5 to 4 m
Habit : Spreading, airy, slightly arching
Bark : Dark brown, deeply fissured with age
Foliage : Deciduous, glossy green, yellow in autumn
Growth : Slow to moderate
Hardiness : –15 °C
June to July, a late flowering that avoids spring frost damage. This timing ensures reliable fruit set even in cooler climates. It also contributes to the regularity of production.
Small star‑shaped yellow‑green flowers, very numerous but discreet. They release a light fragrance and attract many bees. Their abundance guarantees a generous harvest.
Oval fruits larger than those of the standard species, with a smooth reddish‑brown skin when ripe. The flesh is crisp, sweet and aromatic when fresh, becoming soft and very sweet when dried. ‘Abundance’ is self‑fertile, but a second tree increases yield.
Highly nectar‑rich and very attractive to pollinators. Ripe fruits may also attract birds.
Full sun, essential for optimal fruiting. Tolerates heat and dry summers extremely well. A warm exposure improves fruit size and flavour.
Well‑drained soil, even poor, stony or calcareous. The tree thrives where many other fruit trees fail. Light, airy soils are ideal.
Loosen the soil deeply to allow the taproot to develop. Add a small amount of mature compost without excess. Ensure good drainage, as the jujube tree dislikes standing water.
3 to 4 m between trees. This allows the crown to develop fully and improves air circulation. It also facilitates harvesting.
Dry to fresh, well‑drained, neutral to calcareous, even stony. The tree tolerates poor soils very well. It can grow in harsh and arid conditions.
Dig a wide and deep hole. Place the root ball without burying the collar, backfill with the extracted soil and water generously. Apply a light mulch to retain moisture.
Regular watering to keep the soil slightly moist. This helps the tree establish well. Once rooted, it becomes very autonomous.
Very low; the jujube tree is one of the most drought‑resistant fruit trees. It can withstand long dry periods. Occasional watering in summer can improve fruit size.
Prune at the end of winter to shape the tree and remove dead branches. Maintain an open structure to encourage light penetration and fruiting. Avoid heavy pruning, as the tree fruits on one‑year‑old wood.
Grafting onto Ziziphus jujuba rootstock to preserve the cultivar’s characteristics. Cuttings are difficult but possible in warm conditions. Seed propagation does not reproduce ‘Abundance’ true to type.
Family orchards, dry gardens, fruit hedges, warm and sunny areas. Suitable for Mediterranean gardens and poor soils. Also fits well in naturalistic plantings.
Olive tree, fig tree, almond tree, pomegranate, lavender, rosemary. These plants share excellent drought tolerance. Together they create a harmonious atmosphere.
Fruits are eaten fresh, dried or cooked. In Asia, they are used in sweets, teas, syrups and traditional medicine for their energising properties. They are also valued for their high vitamin and mineral content.
Very resistant and rarely affected by diseases. May be slightly sensitive to scale insects in confined conditions. Excess moisture can cause root problems.
Maintain an airy structure through light pruning. Use black soap or natural white oil in case of scale insects. Avoid overwatering and ensure good drainage.
Plant in full sun to maximise fruiting. Water only during the first weeks, then let the tree grow independently. Combine with other drought‑tolerant fruit trees for a durable, low‑maintenance orchard.
‘Abundance’ stands out for its much higher yield, larger fruits, very fast fruiting, and reduced thorniness compared to the standard species. Its production is more regular and abundant. It is one of the most reliable cultivars for temperate climates.
The Chinese date ‘Abundance’ is a highly productive fruit tree offering large, sweet fruits and very fast fruiting. Its exceptional drought resistance makes it ideal for sunny gardens. This reliable cultivar provides abundance, originality and easy cultivation.
