Description
Native to southern Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay, the Feijoa belongs to the Myrtaceae family. It is appreciated both for its ornamental flowers and its edible, tropical-tasting fruit. In mild climates, it is also grown as an ornamental shrub.

Spread: 1.5 to 2 metres
Habit: Bushy, dense and rounded
Foliage type: Evergreen; dark green leaves with silvery underside, leathery
Flowering period: June to July
Flowers: Pink with crimson stamens, airy, edible, sweet with a banana flavour
Fruit: Oval, green with thick skin, white to creamy yellow flesh, tangy with a flavour of guava-pineapple-strawberry; harvest from September to November depending on the variety
Hardiness: Moderate to good, depending on the variety (-10°C to -12°C, often regrows from base after severe frost)
Exposure: Warm, sunny spot sheltered from cold winds
Soil: Light, well-drained, fresh but tolerant even of poor soils; avoid waterlogging
Tolerance: Drought-tolerant once established, salt spray tolerant, performs well in chalky soils
Period: Spring or autumn, outside frost periods
Preparation: Ensure good drainage; add sand or gravel if needed
Spacing: 1.5 to 2 metres depending on habit; plant two specimens for good cross-pollination
At planting: Regular watering during the first year
Mature plants: Water in prolonged dry periods; copes with temporary drought
