The sea buckthorn or Hippophae rhamnoides is a thorny shrub native to Asia and Europe, decorative in both winter and summer. Its very intense silver gray deciduous leaves, its very melliferous yellow flowers and especially its very decorative fruits make it all the originality.

There are male and female plants (the sex of sea buckthorn flowers is only determined after 3 to 5 years of planting). Subject to being fertilized by the former, the latter produce abundant orange berries that color in September and persist late in winter. These edible fruits with an acid and fragrant flavor are very rich in vitamin C. They are eaten as jelly or jam. Argouse juice is drunk plain or sweet, it is used to flavor candies and syrups.

Hippophae rhamnoides can reach a height of 3 m in adulthood for a width of 5 m. It thrives in the most ungrateful terrains and withstands the cold down to -30 ° C. It is also resistant to drought and soil salinity. Sea buckthorn is often used to make windbreaks, to consolidate slopes or banks and to fix dunes.

It is essential to plant both sexes in association to obtain fruiting(one male plant for 3 to 6 female plants).
