Origin North America

Native to North America, the Amelanchier alnifolia Honeywood commonly known as Alder-leaf shadbush Honeywood is an exceptional fruit tree in many ways. Very resistant to downy mildew and fungal diseases, this variety is also very productive and self-fertile (however, a better cross-pollination yield is obtained). Its many fruits are gathered in clusters composed of large, very juicy and deliciously sweet purple berries, 1.6 cm in diameter. It is harvested at the beginning of July, about ten days later than that of most of its congeners.Patience is rewarded during the tasting when these berries reveal their astonishing cocktail of honey and blueberry softened with a subtle note of apple. Packed with antioxidants, the berries of the Alder-leaf shadbush Honeywood produce delicious juices and jellies.

These fruits are very coveted by birds, it is better to protect them from their attacks with a protective net if you want to keep some for yourself.

Amélanchier alnifolia Honeywood is resistant to cold down to minus temperatures of -26 to -30 ° C. This beautiful shrub with an erect habit can reach 2 to 3 m in height for a spread of 1.5 to 2 m. Its exuberant white and melliferous bloom appears in May and covers its delicate soft green serrated foliage which turns orange-yellow in autumn.

The Amélanchier alnifolia Honeywood thrives in partial shade, in a rather rich and slightly acidic garden soil. It supports pruning very well.

In summary, this is a shrub that really deserves to be known.
