Amelanchier alnifolia Thiessen, large sweet and aromatic fruits.

Native to North America, Amelanchier alnifolia Thiessen or Alder-leaf shadbush Thiessen is a fruit shrub that seduces by its harmonious silhouette, but also by its generous spring flowering, its fruits of excellent taste quality, larger than those of the type species and its bluish foliage taking a magnificent autumnal coloring in orange-yellow tones. It is a variety of Amelanchier, very productive and very floriferous which offers good resistance to cold from -26 to -30 ° C, and to diseases such as powdery mildew. Although self-fertile, you will get a better harvest by planting two or more feet.

In April, Amelanchier alnifolia Thiessen reveals an abundance of white, fragrant flowers, gathered in clusters at the end of the branches. They are followed by berries, black when ripe, the size of a blackcurrant, which are harvested early, in June. These juicy fruits have a sweet, slightly tart flavor and are rich in vitamins. They are eaten both raw and cooked, in jams, jellies, pies or juice.

Robust and easy to grow, the Alder-leaf shadbush Thiessen is undemanding on the nature of the soil even though it prefers slightly acidic, cool and well-drained soils. It likes exposure to the sun or partial shade. Reaching an adult height of 5 m for a spread of 2 m, it can easily be pruned.
