Its clusters of tubular flowers, of a brilliant pink red, attract the glances and the pollinators from March to May. They are followed by edible but not very tasty fruits that look like gooseberries. These are very popular with birds.

The foliage of the Flowering currant King Edward VII is deciduous, it strongly resembles that of the fruit currant. It is dark green above and lighter below. It takes on yellow and orange hues in the fall, providing a nice contrast to the reddish stems.
