She has one more thing… The Matteuccia struthiopteris bears the pictorial name of Ostrich feather fern. Highly decorative, this fern with a very narrow erect port develops masterful fronds of a very bright green that can reach 1.5 m, producing a tuft extending over 0.6 m. Its straight leafy petioles divided into lanceolate segments give it a refined and elegant design. Native to the Alps, Germany and eastern North America, this plant is particularly suited to northern climates where it resists cold down to —20 C.

Very present in the undergrowth, Matteuccia struthiopteris is ideal as a ground cover. This shade to partial shade plant perfectly tolerates atmospheric pollution, diseases, and aridity once well established. Undemanding, it thrives in any soil, preferably acidic and cool. Pruning the dried fronds at the end of autumn keeps their chromatic harmony throughout the year. Installed at the edge of a pond or near a grove, its presence gives the whole a very spontaneous, almost original personality.

The Ostrich Feather Fern also allows you to play on contrasts. Placed in a bed made up of other heather plants such as a Skimmia, it lightens the whole by producing a beautiful volume, of superb vitality.
