Roman chamomile, scientifically known as Chaeammelum nobile or Anthemis nobilis, brings a cheerful and fragrant touch to gardens. This perennial herb, belonging to the large Asteraceae family, reaches a height of 10 to 30 cm. Its stems tend to creep along the ground before becoming upright when it flowers. From June to September, its numerous white flowers with yellow centers, emerging from the green carpet of its finely cut leaves, can be enjoyed.

Undemanding, Anthemis nobilis always finds its place in the garden in a sunny location. Used in pots or as ground cover at the base of trees, it combines beautifully with lavender and other perennials. Grown in the ground, in beds or borders, it self-seeds from year to year if conditions are favorable. It is also a welcome addition to vegetable gardens, as its aromatic potency repels many so-called harmful insects.

Although it prefers cool, light soils, once established, Roman chamomile tolerates periods of drought. Potted plants, however, will need regular watering. A good pruning at the end of the season allows Roman chamomile to start the following spring vigorously. Hardy, it can withstand temperatures down to -20°C if the soil is well-drained.

Known since antiquity for its medicinal and cosmetic properties, its many benefits have earned it the name of common chamomile. Delicious infusions can be made from its flowers.
