Description
Created in Belgium in 1865, Camellia japonica 'Margherita Coleoni' belongs to the Theaceae family. This historic cultivar is prized for its beautiful flowering and good hardiness.
Exposure : Bright partial shade or light shade.
Soil : Acid to neutral, humus‑rich, fresh, light and well‑drained.
Tolerance : Dislikes calcareous soils and overly dry or hot locations.
Period : All year round outside frost periods, ideally autumn or spring.
Preparation : Mix ericaceous soil, potting soil and garden soil; mulching recommended to retain moisture.
Spacing : 1 to 1.50 metres.
At planting : Regular watering to encourage rooting.
Mature plant : Water during summer drought; keep soil fresh without excess moisture.
Time : After flowering, in May‑June.
Advice : Light pruning to balance the shape; remove dead wood or poorly placed branches.
Semi‑ripe cuttings in summer.
Locations : Ericaceous beds, specimen planting, containers for terrace or balcony.
Recommended plant associations :
Azaleas to extend the spring effect.
Prunus subhirtella autumnalis for its off‑season flowering.
Cercis siliquastrum for its bright fuchsia blossoms.
Susceptibility : Sensitive to chlorosis in calcareous soil; watch for possible scale insects.
Prevention : Use acidic soil, mulch to retain moisture, monitor for pests.
Plant in acidic, fresh soil, water regularly without excess, protect from dry wind and harsh sun, mulch each spring, lightly fertilise with ericaceous fertiliser after flowering.
