With its lush, deep green foliage spotted with creamy white, the Japanese aralia Spider's web or Fatsia japonica Spider's web is a tropical-looking, hardy, easy to grow shade or semi-shade plant. It can reach a good size at full maturity and is ideal for shady corners of the garden.
The Japanese aralia Spider's web has large evergreen leaves with creamy white mottling on sturdy stems, reaching a height of 2 metres at maturity. Hardy: it can withstand temperatures as low as -15°C. The Fatsia japonica Spider's web flowers from August to October. Its round, clustered flowers are cream in colour. The flowers are followed by small, black, inedible fruits.
In the open ground, the Japanese aralia Spider's web needs rich, moist but drained soil. It thrives in heather soil (acidic pH) but can also thrive in neutral pH soil. The Japanese aralia Spider's web is planted from April to July.
In pots, it appreciates a substrate of compost, peat and sand. Add roasted horn, dried blood and potassium sulphate to improve the quality of the soil. In spring and summer, fertilise once a month and water regularly. In winter, space out the watering and mulch abundantly.
In shade beds, in the undergrowth or even on the edge of the undergrowth, the magnificent foliage of the Fatsia japonica Spider's web inevitably attracted attention by its particularity.
