Elaeagnus ebbingei Compacta or Ebbinge's silverberry Compacta : a small, decorative, evergreen shrub.

The Ebbinge's silverberry Compacta has an extremely dense and bushy habit, which makes it particularly useful for creating windbreaks hedges. Decorative and very fragrant, it is an asset in a small garden.

Elaeagnus ebbingei Compacta does not exceed 2 metres in height and 1.5 metres in spread. It is an evergreen shrub with dark green, slightly silvery leaves. The leaves are leathery and glossy. The Ebbinge's silverberry Compacta flowers in autumn: very small, creamy white flowers bloom between September and November. They are very melliferous and nectariferous, attracting bees and butterflies. The fruits that follow the flowering are very decorative, elongated and orange in colour when ripe, and are edible for both humans and birds.

Elaeagnus ebbingei Compacta is a hardy shrub, resistant to sea spray, harsh winters and temperatures as low as -23°C. It enjoys all types of soil, even unpleasant ones, and can withstand drought very well. Plant it in sun or semi-shade, in spring or autumn. Water well after planting to help the plant take root. Prune lightly in late winter or early spring. The Ebbinge's silverberry Compacta is well suited to windbreaks hedges but can also be grown in beds or pots.
