Hypericum Hidcote or St John's Wort: a small, very decorative and robust shrub.

Hyperycum Hidcote is a shrub native to Asia. It is called Hidcote because it was grown at the manor house of the same name, north-east of Bristol. It is a very floriferous shrub that lasts all summer, very easy to grow and ideal for all gardeners, both beginners and experienced.

St. John's Wort has dark green to bluish, semi-evergreen foliage and is a small, bushy shrub with a maximum height of 1.50 m and a spread of 1 to 1.50 m. It will fit in perfectly in beds, borders or rock gardens. Its branches are supple and rounded. Hypericum Hidcote has a naturally round and compact shape. Its foliage is very dense and its flowering spectacular: between July and September, the shrub is adorned with large golden yellow cup-shaped flowers of 4 to 5 cm, nectariferous and melliferous. The small fruits that follow the flowering are very decorative.

A small, trouble-free shrub, St. John's Wort can grow in any soil, even poor, dry and stony. It accepts shade, full sun or part shade, but will flower more abundantly if planted in the sun. Hypericum Hidcote is hardy: it can withstand temperatures as low as -20°C. It is semi-hardy in temperate regions, but will lose its leaves below -5°C. St John's Wort should be planted preferably between October and April, in hedges, isolated, in pots or in beds. The first year will require more frequent watering during the dry months. Hypericum Hidcote is fast growing (about 40 cm per year) and develops naturally in a rounded shape.
