Description
Native to North America, Physocarpus opulifolius belongs to the Rosaceae family. The 'Red Baron' variety is valued for its intense foliage colour and ease of cultivation.
Adult height : 1.50 to 2 metres.
Adult spread : 1.50 to 2 metres.
Habit : Bushy, compact, dense.
Foliage type : Deciduous; golden bronze when emerging, deep purple to black in summer.
Flowering period : May to June.
Flowers : Clusters of small purple buds turning into white, nectar‑rich flowers.
Fruits : Decorative red capsules in late summer.
Hardiness : Excellent, down to –25 °C.
Exposure : Full sun or partial shade.
Soil : Ordinary, well‑drained, even poor or slightly calcareous.
Tolerance : Very resistant to sea spray, pollution and difficult environments.
Preparation : Loosen soil, add compost if needed to support establishment.
