Description
Forsythia × intermedia is a deciduous ornamental shrub, a hybrid between Forsythia suspensa and Forsythia viridissima. Famous for its bright yellow bloom that appears even before the leaves, it is one of the very first shrubs to announce spring. Its vigour, hardiness, and ease of cultivation make it a must-have in gardens, whether planted as a specimen, in borders, or flowering hedges.

Spread: 2 to 4 m
Habit: Upright, with slightly arching branches, giving a natural and graceful appearance
Foliage: Deciduous, bright green, lanceolate, sometimes yellow in autumn
Flowering: March to April, abundant and showy
Flowers: Bright yellow, bell-shaped, star-like, borne directly on bare wood
Hardiness: Excellent, down to -30 °C
Resistance: Rarely troubled by pests or diseases, tolerates pollution and calcareous soils
Exposure: Full sun for best flowering, tolerates partial shade
Soil: Ordinary, fertile, fresh but well-drained
Tolerance: Adapts to most soils, except waterlogged conditions
Best time: Autumn (ideal) or spring
Spacing: 1.5 to 2 m for an airy hedge
Tip: Add compost at planting to encourage growth and flowering
Watering: Regular during the first year, then only in prolonged drought
Pruning: Immediately after flowering, cut back old stems at the base and shorten new shoots by one-third
Avoid: Pruning in late summer or autumn, which removes the following year’s flower buds
Cuttings: Hardwood cuttings in winter or semi-ripe cuttings in summer
Layering: Easy, by bending down a low branch to the ground
