Golden indian bean tree, a splendid golden crown in summer

The Golden indian bean tree or Catalpa bignonioides Aurea is a small tree of moderate development, with low branching, very decorative, which is ideal for small spaces. This is a very beautiful variety, native to North America, which is distinguished by large golden leaves, purple when young, particularly bright.

The Golden indian bean tree can reach a height of 6 to 8 m for the same width if it is not pruned, it then takes on a beautiful rounded shape which spreads out with age, then its lower branches curve towards the ground. The foliage appears quite late in spring. First purple when they are born, the large and broad leaves (up to 20 to 30 cm long and 25 cm wide), heart-shaped, turn golden yellow then golden green during the summer and finally yellow very pronounced in autumn. In June/July, the Catalpa bignonioides Aurea is covered with erect panicles of 25 cm of white campanulate flowers with a purple heart, they are followed, in autumn, by fruits similar to long hanging pods measuring up to 35 cm long by 1 cm wide, these remain in place all winter, the spectacle is striking.

Hardy up to -23°C, it is easy to cultivate. The Golden indian bean tree appreciates a sunny or partial shade location, protected from the wind. It thrives in any type of soil, light, fresh, preferably well drained.

A very ornamental tree, recognizable among all, the Catalpa bignonioides Aurea is appreciated in summer, for the shade it provides. Planted alone or lined up along a path, its golden colours immediately catch the eye.
