Description
The Japanese Maple ‘Phoenix’ (Acer palmatum ‘Phoenix’) is a sought-after variety for its spectacular foliage that changes throughout the seasons. In spring, its young coral-red shoots glow in the sun, creating a striking contrast with the fresh green tones of summer. In autumn, it dons a magnificent yellow-orange then red coat, reminiscent of the flames from which it takes its name. Hardy, easy to care for and suitable for small spaces, it thrives equally well in pots or in the ground.
Originating from the Japanese horticultural tradition, the Acer palmatum ‘Phoenix’ belongs to the Sapindaceae family. Selected for its exceptional foliage, it reflects the Japanese art of seasonal contemplation (momijigari). This relatively recent variety is particularly appreciated in modern gardens, where its blazing colours provide a focal point throughout the year.
The modest yet delicate flowering appears in April–May as small reddish flowers grouped in clusters. In summer they give way to winged fruits (samaras), adding decorative interest before falling.
Plant preferably in spring or autumn, adding mature compost to the base of the hole. In pots: choose a wide container with effective drainage. An organic mulch helps to retain moisture.
Pruning is not essential. Remove only dead or poorly placed branches in winter. Avoid heavy pruning, which may weaken the plant.
Propagation is generally by grafting, a technique reserved for nurserymen to ensure varietal fidelity.
The Japanese Maple ‘Phoenix’ is ideal as a specimen plant to showcase its foliage, in a pot on a terrace, or integrated into a Japanese-themed border with azaleas, rhododendrons or ferns. Its compact form makes it easy to pair with other ornamental shrubs.
Rarely affected by diseases, though excess water can lead to root rot. Young leaves may be damaged by late frosts or dry winds.
The Japanese Maple ‘Phoenix’ is an unmissable choice for lovers of refined gardens. Its spectacular foliage and compact habit make it an ideal shrub for small spaces, terraces and Japanese gardens. Easy to grow, hardy and decorative year-round, it’s a safe bet for anyone seeking a bright and elegant Japanese maple. In pots or in the ground, it will transform your outdoor space into a living picture.
