The Paulownia tomentosa is a spectacular, fast-growing ornamental tree. Its fragrant, lavender-blue flowers, immense foliage, and generous shade make it a remarkable choice for large gardens.
Description
The Princess Tree (Paulownia tomentosa), also known as the Foxglove Tree, is one of the most spectacular ornamental trees for temperate gardens. It is widely appreciated for its extremely fast growth, exotic appearance, and stunning spring flowering display. Before the leaves emerge, the tree produces large upright panicles of lavender to violet trumpet-shaped flowers that fill the air with a delicate fragrance reminiscent of violets.
This tree is increasingly used in landscape design due to its ability to create shade very quickly. Its enormous heart-shaped leaves give it a tropical appearance, especially when it is coppiced or heavily pruned, resulting in even larger foliage.
The Princess Tree combines ornamental value, ecological interest, and rapid development. It is highly attractive to pollinators and contributes significantly to early-season biodiversity. Its vigorous growth makes it particularly suitable for large gardens and parks where a strong visual impact is desired in a short time.
Paulownia tomentosa originates from central and western China, where it naturally grows in fertile, well-drained mountain soils.
It belongs to the small Paulowniaceae family, composed of fast-growing ornamental trees native to East Asia.
The Princess Tree is considered one of the fastest-growing temperate trees. Introduced to Europe in the 19th century, it is also linked to Princess Anna Pavlovna of the Netherlands, from whom its historical name originates.
Under favourable conditions, it quickly reaches impressive heights.
The crown becomes wide, rounded and open with age.
Extremely vigorous growth with long annual shoots and rapid crown formation.
Smooth grey-brown bark that becomes slightly fissured with age.
Very large, heart-shaped, velvety leaves measuring 15–35 cm, sometimes exceeding 60 cm in coppiced trees.
One of the fastest-growing trees in temperate climates.
Very hardy down to around -25°C.
Flowering occurs from April to May, before leaf emergence.
Large upright panicles of lilac to violet trumpet-shaped flowers, highly fragrant and very attractive to bees and bumblebees.
Ovoid woody capsules containing many winged seeds that disperse by wind.
Excellent early-season nectar source for pollinators.
Full sun is required for best growth and flowering.
Prefers deep, fertile, well-drained soils and sheltered positions in windy areas.
Regular watering during establishment; drought tolerant when mature.
Can be pruned or coppiced annually, producing very large leaves but no flowers.
Ideal as a specimen tree in large landscapes and parks.
Generally very resistant and low-maintenance.
Paulownia pairs beautifully with Goldenrain Tree, Catalpa, Sweetgum, Tulip Tree, Ginkgo, Judas Tree, and large shrubby Hydrangeas. These plants thrive in similar conditions and contribute to creating a spectacular display.
In Asia, Paulownia wood has been used for centuries to make furniture, chests, musical instruments, and handcrafted objects. Lightweight, stable, and durable, it possesses excellent mechanical properties. Some Chinese traditions also associated this tree with prosperity and longevity.
Highly valued for its dramatic flowering and exceptional growth rate.
