Description
Quercus Ellipsoidalis or Northern pin oak is native to the Northeastern United States, introduced to Europe in 1902. It strongly resembles Palustris oak, its beautifully cut young foliage is delicately tinged with red, then it turns brilliant green, then, in fall it turns scarlet red. It will perfectly decorate your garden all year round. In spring, at the same time as the leaves appear, the tree is covered with 10 cm long golden catkins which will give light brown oval acorns of 1.2 to 2 cm, what differentiates it precisely from Palustris which develops much smaller acorns. Once wilted, the leaves stay on the tree for a very long time, sometimes until early spring. The trunk of the Northern pin oak reveals a beautiful dark gray cracked bark under its magnificent foliage.
The Quercus ellipsoidalis is a tree that reaches 15 to 20 meters in height and 13 meters in wingspan when adult. Initially pyramidal, it presents a more oval shape, even rounded over the years. Very resistant, it withstands temperatures down to - 28 ° C. Northern pin oak prefers to be planted in dry, acidic soil with good sunlight.
A tree like this in your garden will do wonders. Quercus ellipsoidalis can be planted anywhere, as long as it has room to flourish. It will be both isolated and surrounded by other large trees. In the fall, its scarlet red color and majestic port will be a real eye-catcher.
