An ornamental shrub with a spreading habit native to Japan and northern Asia, Aralia Elata, also called Japanese Angelica tree , is distinguished by original foliage with sumptuous autumnal hues and an equally remarkable flowering. In some countries, we eat its young shoots.

Aralia Elata has very large bipinnate leaves (they can reach 1 m), divided into leaflets. In spring, they are green, they turn orange-yellow at the beginning of autumn to finally become purplish red. The spectacular flowering takes place in early summer and lasts until fall. They are small creamy white flowers gathered in large vaporous panicles, they are followed by small blackish round drupes very popular with birds.

The Japanese Angelica tree tolerates all types of soil with a preference for slightly acidic, rich and cool soils. It particularly likes sunny locations or in partial shade, sheltered from strong winds to prevent the leaves from drying out. Very resistant, it resists cold temperatures of the order of -34 ° C.

With a height of 5 to 6 m or even 10 m in some regions for a width of 5 m, Aralia Elata whose trunk is covered with thorns is an elegant shrub which will be the most beautiful effect cultivated in isolation on your lawn.
