Description
Rhododendron Calsap is an ornamental shrub known for its spectacular spring bloom. This variety of horticultural origin is a hybrid of rhododendron catawbiense "Catalgla" and rhododendron "Sappho".
The flowering of the Rhododendron Calsap appears at the beginning of May. The pale pink floral buds bloom in beautiful white flowers spotted with garnet red, arranged in corymbs. They bring a bright touch to the gardens in spring, while many bushes have not yet flowered. The dense foliage of this rhododendron is evergreen.
Rhododendron Calsap is a so-called acidophilus plant: it likes acidic soils and well drained, clay-silty or heather earth. It requires the maintenance of cool, wet soil during periods of drought. Particularly hardy, this variety of rhododendrons can withstand temperatures down to -23 ° C. This makes it a plant adaptable to all climates, provided that it has an acid and draining ground and a semi-shade situation.
A shrub with a bushy growth of up to 1.80 m in adulthood, Rhododendron Calsap is ideal for ornamenting a small garden. It can be combined with other heather earth plants, such as azaleas and pieris. They will produce together a beautiful flowering shrubbery in spring.
