Origin North America

The Vaccinium corymbosum Spartan or Blueberry Spartan is a small fruit-bearing shrub native to North America. This very productive species has an early fruiting season, lasting 3 weeks, and produces fairly large, firm-fleshed, aromatic, sweet and tart fruits. Blueberry Spartan is self-fertile, with a better yield when cross-pollinated with one or two other plants or varieties.

The Blueberry Spartan is hardy (-25°C) and prefers a light, acidic soil with added heather earth and a sunny or semi-shaded position. When fully grown, it measures 1.20 to 1.50 metres in height with a circumference of about 1.50 metres. This variety is very decorative for most of the year: with its upright habit, its sublime green deciduous foliage that turns purple-red in autumn, and its pretty blue-black berries that are a treat for gourmets.

Vaccinium corymbosum Spartan is easy to grow and maintain: generous watering at planting will facilitate its rooting, and it requires little water once it is well established. It is advisable to prune it every year at the beginning of March to encourage its growth and make it denser. Its small white flowers are a source of food for pollinators and its fruits are also appreciated by birds.
