Description
Actinidia kolomikta or Arctic Beauty kiwi vine female is native to Ukraine. It is therefore exceptionally cold hardy and allows everyone to enjoy kiwifruit from their own garden.
Actinidia kolomikta is a female plant that flowers in late spring. The creamy white flowers are fragrant and attract pollinating insects. The male Adam kiwifruit should be planted nearby to ensure fertilisation. (One male plant for every 6-8 female plants).
Two to three years may be needed before good fruiting is achieved. The oblong kiwis are about 2.5 cm long. Bright green, smooth skinned, hairless and therefore ready to eat immediately (or later, in jam). From the end of August until the end of September, you can enjoy their sweetness and their well-known tonic effect.
The tasty mini kiwifruit or kiwai that it produces is not its only interest: the Arctic Beauty kiwi vine female brings a beautiful presence to the garden with its original foliage. The foliage is beautifully splashed with silvery white, while the tips of the young leaves are soft pink. A mid-shade exposure favours this delicate spring effect. The deciduous foliage also takes on beautiful autumnal hues. Finally, the Arctic Beauty kiwi vine remains decorative for most of the year.
Easy to grow and very hardy down to -40°C, your Arctic Beauty kiwi vine will reach a height of about 4 m and a spread of 4 m. Plant it out of the wind, in sun or half-shade. It can be trained against a wall or placed on a solid support. It will look good on a pergola, for example.
Actinidia kolomikta appreciates humusy but well-drained soil, light and neutral.
At the end of winter, prune the branches that have borne fruit to two eyes. In summer, mulch the base in case of drought.
