Description
A very productive variety, the Leikora sea buckthorn female or Hippophae rhamnoides Leikora bears tasty, large-sized fruit. During the summer months, its melliferous flowers are a delight for bees. Vigorous but with very little suckering, this shrub is also easy to grow.
Native to Western Europe, the Leikora sea buckthorn female is a very hardy variety, which can withstand cold temperatures of up to -29°C. It is 4 metres high at maturity and about 3 metres wide. Its leaves are bluish green and wider than those of the Hergo variety. The small yellow flowers bloom in April and May. They produce large orange fruits 5 to 8 mm in diameter, which are a real concentrate of vitamins and antioxidants. Their tangy flavour is delicious in compotes, jellies, syrups or as a seasoning for meat or fish. They are harvested in September and October.
Hippophae rhamnoides Leikora is planted in autumn, alone or in a hedge, for fruiting the following year. It appreciates all soils, whether ordinary or poor. Very easy to care for, the Leikora sea buckthorn female requires no pruning at all, as its fruit develops on the two-year-old branches.
