Ribes rubrum Red Lake, a bountiful harvest of tart fruit.

The Ribes rubrum Red Lake, also known as the Redcurrant Red Lake, is a very productive self-fertile variety of currant, grown for its tasty, tart fruit. Hardy to -18°, this shrub is also highly resistant to diseases such as powdery mildew and anthracnose. It flowers in June, when small, insignificant greenish flowers appear. These give way to long, hanging clusters of light red, slightly acidic fruits that ripen in July.

Redcurrant Red Lake are easy to grow, preferring a spot of cool sun or part shade, and can be planted in any type of soil, enriched with organic matter and well drained. Prune it in February by removing branches older than 5 years, cutting them off flush with the ground.

The Redcurrant Red Lake will provide you with a profusion of delicious currants that can be eaten raw, but which you can use mainly to make jams, jellies and pies.
