The Ribes nidigrolaria Josta or jostaberry, an abundant harvest of fruit.

Ribes nidigrolaria Josta or jostaberry is a very productive, thornless fruit shrub, a hybrid resulting from the crossing of a blackcurrant (Ribes Nigrum) and a gooseberry (Ribes uva-crispa). Vigorous, resistant down to -20 ° C and very disease resistant, it offers an abundant harvest of large fruits, devoid of seeds, with a pleasantly sweet taste, less acid than blackcurrant. It reaches a height of 1.50 m for a spread of 1 m.

The flowering of jostaberry takes place in April, the shrub is then adorned with small self-fertile flowers which are followed in mid-July by globular green berries then black when ripe, larger than blackcurrants, up to 1 cm. Fruits form on twigs that are two years old. The berries have the texture of gooseberry and the taste of blackcurrants, however their flavor is smoother and more fruity.

The Ribes nidigrolaria Josta appreciates the sun but also thrives very well in partial shade. It is grown in rich, cool and well-drained soil. It does not tolerate limestone. As the fruit forms on the two-year-old twigs, it should be pruned with care.

The fruit of jostaberry can be eaten raw. It is mainly used in cooking to bake cakes or to decorate sauces. It turns into delicious jams, jellies and sorbets.

Don't hesitate to combine Ribes Josta with other berry shrubs such as raspberries and currants to create a gourmet hedge. Good tasting !
